"First Adventure" CD Liner Notes 1. Fast As I Can Crawl: This is one of the group’s original bluegrass efforts. Mark Newton recorded it and took it to the top ten on the national bluegrass charts.
2. Rainbow Café: This soulful tune set in West Tennessee gives you a glimpse of life gone by along Highway 100, a colorful road that cuts through rural Americana from Memphis to Nashville.
3. The Virginia Creeper: We’d never written a song using the name of a plant, but just the challenge made it worth the effort. Ladies, this “creeper” sure covers some ground.
4. Axe To Grind: You can almost see the mist rising off of this mournful ballad. The song won us an invitation to play at MerleFest, the “Woodstock” of our nation’s bluegrass festivals.
5. Smoky Mountain Mornin’ Song: The beauty and wonder of the East Tennessee mountains is captured through the eyes of a backcountry explorer and put expertly to song.
6. I Still Miss Someone: Don had a hit with this vintage Johnny Cash song as an artist on Epic Records. It’s time to dust it off and do it again.
7. The Roadkill Bill: Believe it or not, there’s a law in Tennessee that makes it legal to possess road-killed wildlife without the need of a hunting license. The songwriter in us couldn’t resist this one. By the way, the band had been doing this long before they passed the law.
8. Redneck Renovations: If you live in the South, no interpretation is necessary here. If you don’t, you’ll get an instant visual that’s guaranteed to be 99% accurate.
9. Nocturnal Creatures: This tune teaches a lesson or two about some of our more elusive wild critters and what the “night life” means to them.
10. Naked On The Back Porch: Written back in the 70’s, this original ditty is among the most requested by our adoring fans. This version was captured live at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium, the mother church of country music.
11. When We’re Gone Long Gone: We found this gem on the Trio II CD made popular by Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt. Life’s lessons in this song are pretty easy to understand.
12. The Roadkill Bill: (extended version) This mix includes more playful banter from our Tennessee legislators during the bill’s passage that should bring a chuckle or two.
Heart-felt thanks to: Our families for supporting our music habits; our loyal listeners, who have waited patiently for this CD; Don King, Sr., for his studio and engineering assistance; our Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency friends and co-workers for encouraging our musical “wild side.”
Special Thanks to Tennessee’s 101st General Assembly for inspiring “The Roadkill Bill.”
